13 Most Romantic Places in Europe

Seville, Spain

Plaza de Espana Seville

Seville is one of the most romantic places in Europe — its atmosphere, culture, and architecture are some of the reasons why I love this city so much.

I would say it is the perfect destination for everyone. Whether you want to spend a romantic weekend in Seville or visit the city with friends, there is something for you.

However, if you are looking for romantic activities, I would recommend visiting the picturesque Plaza de España, exploring the Cathedral, taking a sunset cruise and watching a flamenco show.

If you love food as much as I do, you certainly don’t want to miss taking a tapas tour. Chickpeas with spinach is my favorite traditional dish. However, you can also have oxtail stew, shrimp fritters and other Andalusian delicacies.

Marbella, Spain

Beaches of Marbella

If you are looking for a stylish romantic getaway in Europe, consider Marbella.

The combination of sea and mountains is stunning, and although you can’t expect as many attractions as you would in a big city like Malaga, there are fantastic things for couples to do in Marbella.

My partner and I love spending time in Marbella, and we know the area pretty well, and one of our favorite places is the old town. I love the cobbled streets adorned with flower pots and the laid-back atmosphere.

In addition to exploring the old town, you can eat tapas, go to a beach club, spend time on the beach, and watch the sunset from the Belvue Rooftop Bar.

Although a weekend in Marbella is enough, you will want to spend more time if you come in the summer. Plus, there are many fantastic day trips from Marbella, so you will never get bored.

One of the most popular day trips is Ronda, an inland town in the province of Malaga famous for its high-quality wine, tapas and impressive bridge over 100-metre-deep cliffs. Other day trip options include Tarifa, Malaga and Granada.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is perfect for couples travel

There is something about Lisbon! Its tiled buildings, hilly streets, amazing viewpoints and, of course, pasteis de nata (the traditional Portuguese custard tarts).

If you travel to Lisbon with your partnet, you will have plenty of things to do, from visiting museums and historic buildings like the Jerónimos Monastery to wine tasting.

I recommend spending at least three to five days in Lisbon so you can manage to see it all and squeeze in at least one day trip – trust me, it’s worth it!

During my trip, I visited the pretty town of Sintra. I highly recommend this day trip as it’s one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. The town is small, but is home to many palaces that seem to come straight from a fairy tale. The Pena Palace is the most popular palace, but Quinta da Regaleira is also worth visiting.

For an exquisite lunch or dinner on your day trip to Sintra, I highly recommend visiting Incomum by Luis Santos. They offer an ample menu, but if you’re a seafood lover, you must try their octopus—it’s one of the best I’ve ever had!

If you have a sweet tooth, I highly recommend trying queijadas (a small sweet made with cheese, eggs, milk and powdered sugar) at Casa Piriquita.

Venice, Italy

Venice canals and streets exude romance

Selecting the most romantic city in Italy is no simple feat. With Italy’s endless array of dreamy spots, choosing just one feels like mission impossible.

For this article, I’ve gone with my top three picks, but let’s face it – Italy deserves more destinations in this list. So, the only reasonable thing to do was to write an article about the “Most Romantic Places in Italy,” where I dive deep into Italy’s best spots for the perfect Valentine’s Day or honeymoon. Check it out!

When it comes to Venice, it is just one of those places that ticks off all the boxes if you are looking for a unique and romantic getaway in Europe.

The city has always been linked to love stories and a popular honeymoon destination. Its canals, bridges, gondolas, and colorful buildings are truly beautiful.

In addition, there are so many things to do in Venice beyond the typical gondola ride. If you love history and museums, don’t miss The Palazzo Ducale, Basilica di San Marco and Gallerie dell’Accademia.

If you are a foodie, I insist you need to try Venice cuisine in a local restaurant. You might want to try dishes like Polenta e Schie (polenta with shrimp), Risi e Bisi (Venician-style rice and peas) and Cicchetti (small bites, a wide variety of meat with bread or other toppings). And, of course, don’t forget to eat some delicious gelato!

If you spend more than two days in Venice, I also recommend visiting the colorful city of Burano. It is a fun day trip from Venice.

Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is one of the most romantic places in Europe

Located on the Italian coastline, Cinque Terre consists of five beautiful villages. Think colorful houses clinging to cliffs, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea—pure magic!

One of the best things to do here for a dreamy date is taking a boat trip and exploring the coastline together (sunset is the best time)—it’s like something out of a movie. And when it’s time for dinner, you’re in for a treat! Fresh seafood, local wines, and views to die for—what more could you want?

Cinque Terre is also ideal for couples who love the outdoors, as all five towns are linked by scenic hiking trails. These trails offer breathtaking panoramic views, making the trek well worthwhile! Plus, if you’re not up for a lengthy hike, don’t worry—there are trails of varying lengths and difficulties, ensuring you can still take in the stunning vistas at your own pace.

If what you are seeking is quality time and true relaxation, consider staying for at least three nights. But if you don’t have the time, you can visit Cinque Terre in one day. It’s also perfect for day trips from destinations like Florence and Milan.

Manarola is the best town for a romantic getaway, it offers perfect sunsets, delicious wine, and many charming boutique hotels.

But fair warning: Cinque Terre is a popular destination that gets crazy busy in the summer, so book ahead and secure your slice of romance!

Lake Como, Italy

Top destinations in Italy for a romantic holiday

Lake Como is a must-see destination in Italy, and one of the most romantic places in Europe. If you travel to Milan, you can go on a day trip to Lake Como. However, if you can afford to stay somewhere in Lake Como, it is totally worth it.

Each town is home to gorgeous views of the lake, colorful buildings and pretty corners wherever you go. The best way to travel around Lake Como is by boat, and some of my favorite towns that I would recommend other travelers to visit are Bellagio, Como, and Varenna.

Many of these towns have no major attractions, but they are the perfect place to enjoy its surroundings and atmosphere.

The high season is summer (June to September), and accommodation prices skyrocket. Consider going outside these months during the shoulder season to save money during your trip to Lake Como.

Paris, France

The list of most romantic cities in Europe would not be complete without Paris

Paris, the French capital, also known as “the city of love”, is among the most romantic destinations in Europe and the world, really. The list just wouldn’t be complete without Paris.

It is the perfect getaway for couples who enjoy sightseeing, French food and language. There are many romantic things to do in Paris, starting with enjoying a glass of champagne at the top of the Eiffel Tower. You will be amazed by the stunning city views!

Taking photos in the Wall of Love in Montmartre, visiting the well-known Palace of Versailles, going on a Seine River Cruise at night and dining at a Michelin-star restaurant are other activities you will love doing with your other half.

Although Paris is romantic all year round, I personally think late spring is one of the best times to visit Paris. You can enjoy the beautiful cherry blossoms in the city and avoid the high-season crowds.

There’s no reason not to love Paris. It is just one of those cities that no matter how many times you visit, you’ll always want to return.

French Riviera and Provence

A visit to the beautiful lavender fields in Provence

The French Riviera, also known as the Côte d’Azur is undeniably among the most romantic places in Europe. This stunning stretch of coastline in southeastern France includes famous cities and towns such as Nice, Cannes, Saint-Tropez, and Monaco.

The best way to explore its charm is by embarking on a road trip, starting in the capital city of Nice and heading south to Aix-en-Provence.

This small city serves as an ideal base for exploring other picturesque towns of Provence, such as Gordes and Saint Paul de Vence. Wandering through their narrow streets, especially during sunset, offers a truly romantic experience.

Some of the most romantic activities include visiting the enchanting lavender fields, indulging in wine tasting at Provence’s renowned vineyards, exploring charming markets, or savoring a candlelit dinner overlooking the Mediterranean at one of the Riviera’s upscale restaurants.

This romantic haven is sure to create unforgettable moments for you and your loved one.

Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh's medieval architecture

The capital of Scotland is one of the most beautiful cities to visit with your significant other. Why? You might be wondering.

The beautiful medieval buildings, cobblestone streets, museums, and ancient landmarks like Edinburgh Castle are unmissable attractions. This impressive building alone and its rich history deserve a few hours of your time.

When it isn’t raining, there are a couple of places I especially love visiting for taking photos: Calton Hill, Circus Lane (the prettiest street in Edinburgh!), and Dean Village.

If you and your partner love food, you will adore eating in Edinburgh. You can try traditional dishes like a full Scottish breakfast, Cullen Skink, and desserts like Cranachan. And if you love whiskey, you must go on a whiskey-tasting experience!

The sense of stepping back in time when in Edinburgh is one of the most romantic things about the city. Also, for book lovers, its literary legacy enhances its charm, as Edinburgh has been home to many famous writers and poets, including Sir Walter Scott, Robert Burns, and J.K. Rowling.

Visiting a Greek island is always a romantic trip, and it’s no wonder they’re such a sought-after honeymoon destination.

Santorini, Greece

Santorini's blues and whites

The small island of Santorini is at the top of the list. Its white-painted and blue domes, pretty narrow streets, stunning sunsets and natural surroundings make it so unique.

For a romantic and unforgettable experience, I highly recommend staying in Oia. It is more expensive than other parts of the island, but you will definitely get the best views. Enigma Suites is one of my favorite cliffside hotels. I can guarantee you won’t want to leave this place.

And if you’re looking for cultural experiences, you can find them on Santorini too! Explore the traditional villages of Pyrgos and Megalochori, and while you’re at it, be sure to taste the local wine.

Though Santorini sits in the Aegean Sea, it’s important you know that it doesn’t offer the classic sandy beaches you might expect. With its volcanic past, most beaches here have dark sand.

If you want a beach holiday, consider other islands like Crete or Zakynthos. The beaches here are spectacular!

Budapest, Hungary

Panoramic view of Budapest

The beautiful city of Budapest is full of charm with its cobblestone streets, impressive historic sites and old bridges. It is truly a romantic city to explore with your significant other.

While the city is packed with many famous landmarks to discover and learn about Budapest’s history, there is more beyond the main attractions, which, by the way, I wouldn’t recommend missing.

The Hungarian Parliament Building and Fisherman’s Bastion are unmissable things to do in Budapest, especially the latter, which offers amazing views.

Other romantic activities in Budapest include relaxing at thermal baths, tasting chocolate, setting up a picnic at one of the parks, enjoying the sunset from Gellert Hill, and discovering Budapest’s secret and cozy bars!

Bath, England

Beautiful medieval city of Bath

Located in the southwest of England, Bath is one of the most beautiful European cities. Despite London being the number one city visited in the UK, Bath attracts many tourists every year.

There are many reasons to love Bath, from its Roman and Medieval influences, which are projected in today’s buildings, to its quaint streets, spectacular attractions, and a wide variety of local independent cafes and restaurants. It is a lovely European getaway for couples who prefer smaller cities but still want to sight see and relax.

Some of my favorite things to do in Bath are to visit the Roman Baths and the Thermae Bath Spa, which has a rooftop pool overlooking the city (the views are stunning!).

And some of the most romantic things to enjoy with your partner are seeing a show at The Forum, going on a river cruise, or having top-notch cocktails at The Botanist.

Prague, Czech Republic

Prague is often considered one of the most romantic places in Europe

The city’s picturesque streets, adorned with Baroque and Gothic architecture, create an atmosphere straight out of a fairytale. With such stunning architecture, it’s no wonder Prague is often considered one of the most romantic places in Europe.

You can enjoy many romantic activities in Prague. Starting with a romantic stroll through the city center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. Don’t miss climbing the medieval Astronomical Clock for sunset views, and while exploring, be sure to cross the iconic Charles Bridge.

If that’s not romantic enough, hop on a scenic cruise along the Vltava River or wander through beautiful gardens like Vyšehrad Park, perfect for romantic walks with breathtaking views of Prague Castle.

And for a truly unique experience, indulge in a beer spa!

During Christmas, Prague transforms into a magical wonderland, with charming markets dotting its streets.

And the best part? Prague is quite inexpensive compared to most European cities!
