Best Time to Visit Isla Holbox
Holbox is a tropical island, so you can expect warm temperatures year-round.
The seasons are divided into two: the dry season, from November to May, and the wet season, from June to October. The wet season is also when hurricane season occurs, peaking from August to October.
The most popular time to visit is between December and March when the weather is most settled. However, this is also the high season, so you can expect crowds.
Another great time to visit is during the shoulder months—September to early November and May to early June—when you can enjoy good weather with fewer crowds.
How Much Time Do I need in Isla Holbox
How long you stay in Isla Holbox depends on the purpose of your trip and the activities you intend to do.
However, I would say, stay at least 3 nights to fully enjoy the island at a slow pace and partake in the best things the island has to offer.
How to Get to Isla Holbox
To get to Isla Holbox, you have two main options:
Drive to Chiquila and take the ferry
Rent a car: drive to the port town of Chiquila and park in one of the secure parking lots.
Take a bus or shuttle: you can find ADO bus and shuttle services to Chiquilá from major cities like Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Mérida, etc…
Take a taxi: you can always get a taxi from the airport or your hotel. A taxi is a very efficient option but can also be a costly one. Be sure to always agree on a rate beforehand.
From there, take the ferry to Isla Holbox from the Chiquila port. The ferry ride is around 30 minutes. You can buy tickets online.
Flying into Holbox
Small regional airlines operate flights from Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Cozumel directly to Isla Holbox.
These flights offer a quick and scenic route, landing on a small airstrip near the island. The flight typically takes around 30 minutes.
Best Things to Do in Isla Holbox
Despite it being a small town, there are plenty of things to do in Isla Holbox. Below are the very best – or rather, the most beautiful experiences this tropical island provides!
#1. Hit the Beach and Relax!
Let’s be honest! No trip to Holbox Mexico is complete without spending some time on its beautiful white sand beaches.
A lot of your itinerary when visiting Holbox should include doing absolutely nothing but chilling at the beach!
The island features several stunning playas, each with its unique charm. But here are the top 3 best beaches that I personally recommend — they are definitely worth visiting!
Punta Mosquito is a secluded spot perfect for those seeking tranquility. The clear shallow waters and soft white sand create an idyllic setting for swimming and sunbathing. It’s located far from the center of town, so be prepared to rent a bike, take a taxi or take a long walk to get there (can take around 1-1.5 hours).
Playa Punta Cocos is another popular beach known for its breathtaking sunsets. It’s a great place to unwind, take a dip in the warm turquoise waters, and watch the sky change colors as the sun goes down.
Playa Holbox is the main beach and a favorite among locals and visitors alike. With its lively atmosphere, this beach is perfect for those who enjoy a bit of socializing while soaking up the sun.
#2. Three Islands Boat Tour
While there are plenty of tours available, I believe this one truly stands out, which is why I have decided to include it in the list of the best things to do in Isla Holbox.
Taking the Three Islands Boat Tour is a great way to experience the abundant local wildlife.
The tour consists of a half-day brimming with exploration and adventure. And, as the name implies, this guided excursion takes you on a boat ride to three of Isla Holbox’s most beautiful spots.
The first stop is in Bird Island or Isla Pájaros, this nearby island is a haven for birdwatchers. Here, you will find a dock and viewing platform for observing diverse bird life in their natural habitat. Over 35 species of birds!
The next stop is to Passion Island or Isla Pasión, this tiny island is known for its pristine nature and romantic vibe.
It’s a perfect spot to take a walk and enjoy some relaxing time on the beach. Refresh yourself with a swim in the shallow waters while taking in the views of clear blue seas all around. With some good luck, you can also spot some flamingos, pelicans, colorful fish and possibly manta rays!
The tour concludes at Yalahau Cenote (sinkhole), a natural freshwater pool surrounded by jungle that provides a refreshing break from the saltwater beaches.
FRIENDLY REMINDER: If you visit a Cenote, you are not allowed to wear sunscreen nor mosquito repellent. Additionally, you must shower beforehand to remove any sand or saltwater from your skin.
*Please note that the itinerary might change depending on weather conditions.
#3. Experience Bioluminescent Water at Night
One of the most popular things to do in Isla Holbox is witnessing the bioluminescent water at night. This natural phenomenon occurs when tiny organisms in the water emit a glowing light, creating a mesmerizing display.
To see this incredible sight, head to the beach after dark. But not any beach on Holbox, you should head to Punta Cocos or Punta Mosquito which has low pollution in the areas.
Wave your hands in the water or take a swim, and watch as the water lights up around you.
You can also experience the glowing blue waters by taking a tour, can either be a night snorkeling tour or a night kayaking tour.
It’s an unforgettable experience that shouldn’t be missed, especially with a guide who can provide helpful insight and detailed explanations and show you where to best see the bioluminescent!
HELPFUL TIPS: Aim to go when there’s a new moon or minimal moonlight for the most beautiful effect! Avoid going when heavy rains or strong winds happen since this can make the bioluminescence less noticeable. Although the bioluminescence is visible year-round, the best times are from June to September. During this period, the warmer temperatures bring out the most intense displays.
#4. Swim With Whale Sharks
One of the top things to do in Isla Holbox is, hands down, to swim with the largest fish in the ocean, the whale shark!
Taking a tour to encounter these magnificent gentle giants is a truly special experience, and Holbox is one of the best destinations worldwide for this unforgettable adventure.
Important things to keep in mind when joining a tour:
Before joining a tour, research the tour company. Check reviews and make sure you choose an operator that adheres strictly to regulations and guidelines.
Always keep your safe distance and do not touch the whale sharks.
Please do not use sunblock.
Please don’t use flash photography.
Never feed them.
Note that this activity can only be done during whale shark season, between May and September.
#5. Explore the Mangrove Forests
Take a morning kayak tour through the mangrove swaps of Isla Holbox. A protected area with abundant wildlife.
Exploring these mangroves offers an excellent opportunity to witness wildlife up close and admire spectacular scenery.
Listen attentively to the insights shared by your guide as you keep an eye out for birds, fish, and even crocodiles on rare occasions.
#6. Try Kitesurfing
Holbox beach is famous for being great for kitesurfing. The island’s consistent winds and calm waters create ideal conditions for this exhilarating sport.
There are several kitesurfing schools on the island that offer private lessons for beginners and equipment rentals for more experienced riders.
Whether you’re a pro or a first-timer, kitesurfing on Isla Holbox offers the perfect conditions for an experience you’ll never forget.
Note that kitesurfing season runs from November to June.
P.S. If you are not into extreme sports, you can enjoy watching people kitesurfe while chilling by the beach!
#6. Spot the Majestic Flamingos
Another thing Isla Holbox is famous for is its flamingo population, and spotting these elegant pink birds is a highlight for many visitors.
Head to the shallow lagoons on the island’s northern shores to see these beautiful birds in their natural habitat. Yalahau Lagoon, Punta Cocos, and Punta Mosquito are three specific locations where you can spot them.
The best time to see flamingos is early in the morning and during the dry season, from April to October.
HELPFUL TIP: Remember to bring a pair of binoculars and a camera to capture the moment. And, no matter what, please do not approach them!
#7. Visit Yum-Balam Nature Reserve
Nature lovers will appreciate a visit to the Yum-Balam Nature Reserve. This protected area is home to diverse wildlife and offers stunning landscapes to explore.
Take a guided tour to learn and connect with the reserve’s ecosystem. With a bit of luck, you might spot flamingos, and with even more luck, you might even see some sea turtles and dolphins.
You can explore the area via kayak, hiking trails, and observation points, or enjoy the clear waters and embark on a snorkeling adventure.
#8. Discover the Street Art of Holbox
Isla Holbox’s vibrant culture is reflected in its impressive street art.
Wander through the island’s streets and local markets to discover colorful murals and creative artworks. The heart of town is full of beautiful murals, but expect to find art in the most unexpected locations.
The street art showcases the talent of local and international artists, adding to the island’s unique vibe. Don’t forget to snap some photos of your favorite pieces!
#9. Horseback Riding
For a unique way to explore Isla Holbox, consider going horseback riding. Several local stables offer guided rides along the beach, through the mangroves and other scenic trails.
You don’t need to have any experience riding as you will have a guide and all their horses are very friendly. However, I wouldn’t recommend it for people with back problems, even though it’s a leisure ride!
HELPFUL INSIGHT: Do it at sunset time!
#10. Rent a Bike and Explore
One of the best ways to see all that Isla Holbox has to offer is by renting a bike.
The island’s flat terrain and well-maintained paths make it perfect for cycling (except during the rainy season when the streets transform into rivers).
Besides, the island’s compact size makes it easy to reach any point within 20 to 25 minutes.
Rent a bike and set off on your own adventure. Explore the town center, hidden beaches, and scenic spots at your own pace.
Biking is not only a fun thing to do in Isla Holbox, but also an eco-friendly way to get around the island. It’s even better than the golf cart option!
#11. Watch the Sunset
Last but not least, one of the best things to do in Isla Holbox is to watch the breathtaking sunsets. Each evening, the sky transforms into a canvas of vibrant colors—deep orange, pink, red, purple, and blue hues.
Sunsets are something special on this little island. So, find a cozy spot on the beach, grab a refreshing drink, and watch as the sun dips below the Caribbean.
The best place to see the sunset is from Punta Cocos, located on the western tip of the island.
