Egypt provides a very exciting getaway, from their unique culture to the many interesting sites to visit. Starting with the Great Pyramids of Giza, one of The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Nile River, the Red Sea, ancient treasures, rich history, and so much more!

However, exploring this exciting country can be overwhelming at times, specially if it is your first time, and you have no idea of what to expect.

That is why I have put together these travel tips for Egypt guide that covers the most important things you need to know to ensure you have a comfortable and fun trip.

Egypt Travel Tips: Important Things to Know

After visiting Egypt 3 times, staying over a month each time, and helping plan and carry out several wonderful tours around the country, I definitely learned a few essential Egypt travel tips.

Below is some key information as well as top things to know before you embark on this journey, let’s get started!

Is it Safe to Travel to Egypt?

Yes, it is safe. However, there are a few things to know before traveling to Egypt to ensure your safety.

Scams, hassling and bribery

One of the most important Egypt travel tips to ensure your safety is to always be alert of your surroundings and ensure you store your belongings securely. Y

ou will have to watch out for petty crimes like pickpocketing, scams, hassling, and bribery, as they are pretty common issues in Egypt. Someone will likely try to lure you into a scam or bribe money out of you, so always be on the alert!

Avoid certain destinations

While Egypt is safe, it’s essential to avoid certain destinations as a traveler. Some parts of the country, like the Sinai Peninsula, are off-limits due to terrorism, so you shouldn’t go there.

Solo female travelers

While it is mostly safe for solo female travelers, Egypt can be a little intimidating. As a woman, you will likely experience some sort of harassment. For this reason, I suggest taking a few precautions.

Firstly, always dress in a way that doesn’t attract attention. Secondly, try only moving around in Uber or in train carriages exclusively for women. Thirdly, consider getting a trusted local guide to show you around. Lastly, do not walk around some areas alone past sunset.

LGBTQ

It’s difficult for LGBTQ+ travelers in Egypt to openly express their sexuality or gender identity without facing hostility, including physical violence.

Although homosexuality isn’t officially outlawed in Egypt, there are many instances where LGTBQ+ individuals were prosecuted and given long prison sentences using public moral laws. For this reason, it’s recommended for LGTBQ+ travelers to be discrete and be cautious while in Egypt.

In recent years, Egypt has put some efforts into keeping tourists and travelers safer. They now have a Tourism Police that is expected to safeguard travelers, especially in tourist sites. If you run into any problem, you can reach out to the Tourism Police for help.

Tips for Staying Safe in Egypt

  • Avoid walking alone, especially at night.
  • Don’t carry excessive amounts of cash.
  • Be wary of scams at tourist sites.
  • Always inquire about the prices beforehand.
  • Dress conservatively, especially at religious sites.
  • Do not drink tap water.
  • No PDA.

Know the Rules and Laws

Illegal drugs

Illegal drugs are a BIG no no. Being in possession of illegal drugs, regardless of the amount, is a criminal offense in Egypt, which could attract many years in prison or even life imprisonment.

Public display of affection (PDA)

Although not illegal, Egypt is very conservative and as such, public display of affection (like kissing) is considered very inappropriate. Holding hands is generally okay, but apart from this, avoid any PDA.

Alcoholic drinks

Although most Egyptians are Muslims and abstain from alcohol, it is not forbidden to drink alcoholic beverages in Egypt. However, be sure to only drink in authorized places. Bars, licensed restaurants, and hotels are usually the only places where alcohol is allowed.

Drones

DO NOT BRING YOUR DRONE! We had the very unfortunate situation of having customs take our drone away on arrival at the airport. Although they returned it when we left, it was not a straightforward situation, and, we probably wouldn’t have gotten it back without the help from some local friends.

Egypt prohibits the use of drones unless you have authorization from the ministry of defense, so it is best to leave it safe at home.

What is the Best Time To Visit Egypt?

Essential Egypt Travel Tips

The best time to visit Egypt depends largely on the weather. During June, July, and August, the temperatures are extremely high, which makes it hard for sightseeing during the day. Although, on the bright side, you can enjoy quiet tourist attractions, more availability in hotels, and better rates.

Arguably, the best time to visit Egypt is during Spring and Autumn, during this season the temperatures are fair and pleasant, and the tourist attractions are still fairly quiet.

The high season falls from December to February, so you can expect the tourist attractions to always be crowded, and higher rates due to high demand.

You might want to avoid traveling during Ramadan.

Mind the Crazy Traffic

No Egypt travel tips guide is complete without mentioning the insane traffic! Traffic in Egypt, especially in Cairo, has a set of unique rules- or should I say has no rules?

As a pedestrian, crossing the road is truly an art. There is no such thing as zebra crossings, and there are barely any traffic lights. So, at the top of the list of good-to-know Egypt travel tips is; if you need to cross a busy street, your best bet is getting the help of a local, either asking them to help you cross or following them when they are crossing.

I have experienced the Egyptian roads many times, both in Cairo, and outside traveling around the country by car. And, although everything turned out well, it did not go without a few scary moments.

Including the accident of a bike where the driver died. I am not trying to scare you, I promise! But, driving in Egypt can be a wild experience, so if you are planning to drive, you should be well-prepared and take all the necessary precautions at all times.

Hiring an experienced driver is quite affordable, and, in my opinion, a much better option!

Getting Around Egypt

The best way of getting around Egypt is by Uber. This form of transportation is very affordable, safe, and easy to get.

Additionally, the metro is also a great option, especially if you want to escape the crazy traffic. You can get tickets from the station and download the metro app to locate nearby stations.

Women have the option to ride in the woman-only carriages, usually located in the middle of the train.

When it comes to getting around Egypt, I do not recommend renting a car. The roads are typically very congested, and the traffic rules differ from that of the US and Europe. It is better to hire a driver, get around using public transportation, or join a guided tour in Egypt.

Consider Joining a Guided Tour

Guided tour in Egypt
It was a truly great experience being part of a private tour and meeting beautiful people from around the world!

One of the best Egypt travel tips you can receive is to join a guided tour. Even if you enjoy traveling independently, like I do, Egypt is a little different, and a guided tour will simplify a lot, believe me!

For one, tour companies make getting around a lot easier. Also, they will optimize your tour times and itineraries. And, it will help a lot when it comes to being harassed for tips, or being scammed.

As you may already know, Egypt has a rich culture and history. The problem, however, is that there is little to no information or signs when you go to historic sites. With a guide, you can guarantee learning a lot, getting detailed explanations of every site you visit, hearing incredible stories, and always being able to ask any questions or request more details if needed.

Other benefits of joining a guided tour in Egypt include:

  • Not standing in line.
  • No language barrier issues. Getting around alone may be challenging if you can’t say some phrases in the local language.
  • Experiencing Egypt with a local will make your trip more authentic and will give you a more profound understanding of their culture.

Egypt Travel Requirements—Visas

You will need a visa to travel to Egypt, but the good news is that you can get a visa on arrival at the airport. This option works for citizens from many countries including the USA, Canada, Australia, European Union, Japan, Russia, etc.

You can also apply for an e-visa with your passport, a small application fee, and some information about your accommodation.

While applying online lets you get the visa ahead of time, applying at the airport can be a lot easier. You don’t have to wait weeks for approval when you apply at the airport on arrival, and it costs the same, about $25.

Payment Methods & Currency

One of the most important Egypt travel tips for first timers is to always carry with you enough cash because you will need it.

Most of the activities or places you will visit in Egypt will require you to pay in cash. So, it’s best to have enough cash to pay for tickets, food, transportation, souvenirs, and anything else you might need.

However, avoid bringing large sums of money as this can also make you the victim of theft. Fortunately, there are ATMs around, so you can withdraw with your international card whenever you require money.

When it comes to paying with cards, you will only be able to use them in large establishments like hotels, restaurants, and malls.

Also, before traveling to Egypt, be sure to inform your bank about your travel plans, this way you guarantee you can use your cards without any inconveniences.

Be Ready to Tip… A LOT

Another important Egypt travel tip you should know is that nothing, and I mean NOTHING in Egypt is free.

It is customary to tip people for a service provided, even if you don’t consider it to be a service, so try to keep some small change with you.

For example, when you visit museums, pyramids, or tombs, the attendant may offer to take your picture or show you around or open the door for you, and you are expected to give a tip afterward.

Also, be prepared to tip 10–15% of your bill at cafés and restaurants. You should also tip tour guides, drivers, housekeeping, bathroom attendants, as well as other service staff who look after you.

Nothing is free, literally, so always remember one of the most essential Egypt travel tips, which is to tip service providers. It doesn’t have to be much, anything from 5 to 10 EGP($0.25 – $0.51) is okay, remember that many people’s income comes from these tips.

Get Comfortable Haggling and Bargaining

The next tip in this list will help you get the best deals and save money-if done properly.

Get good at haggling! You can haggle for everything at the market, or even basic services like transportation. Do not feel guilty about bargaining because it’s a norm and expected.

A good bargain tip is to offer a price lower than what you want to pay, and keep stepping up your offer until you and the seller come to an agreement.

Dress Code Egypt Tips

You can wear what you want (just be respectful!)

Another essential things to know before traveling to Egypt is that it’s a very conservative and predominantly Muslim country.

The majority of the women wear hijabs and burkas, keeping their bodies completely covered. So, something to keep in mind when packing for Egypt is to bring clothing that respects their religion and culture.

There are no specific rules on how visitors should dress, you can wear whatever you want. But it is a good idea to be respectful and dress modestly.

If you are visiting religious places like mosques, you will need to cover your hair and legs before you can gain entrance (most mosques will provide garments you can borrow or rent). You will also need to remove your shoes before entering.

If you are in a private place or want to swim, you can wear your bikini and swimsuits, as the rules only apply in public spaces.

Men are okay as long as they cover their shoulders and wear trousers.

Natural fabric clothes or cotton clothes are the best considering the weather. A nice pair of sunglasses and a hat will also be beneficial.

The last Egypt travel advice regarding what to wear is to ensure your shoes are flat and comfortable, you will do a lot of walking!

Essentials for your Packing List

  • Swimwear
  • Scarf
  • Hat & Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Power adaptors  (types C and F)
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Socks (to go inside the mosques)

Other Essential Egypt Travel Tips

  • Buy a local sim card: you can purchase it at the airport or within the city at one of the many shops around. You will need to show your passport.
  • DO NOT DRINK TAP WATER
  • Get travel insurance
  • Stay Hydrated
  • Bring some snacks
  • Bring toilet paper: bathrooms at tourist sites typically do not have toilet paper, so it is a very good idea to bring your own.
  • Be aware of discounts on entry tickets: most tourist sites apply discounts to children and students.
  • Use a VPN to browse the internet
  • Consider getting the Cairo and Luxor Pass. These are only worth it if you plan to visit a lot of sites and multiple days; otherwise, you are better off getting single entry tickets.
  • Try some local cuisine: there are many vegetarian-friendly dishes, but also meaty, delicious meals. Some of the best dishes include: hummus, falafel, shawarma, kebab and kofta.

Egypt is certainly a unique travel experience. However, it becomes challenging when not aware of what to expect. So, I hope this Egypt travel tips guide has helped you feel more prepared for your trip.

I have so many wonderful memories from my trips to Egypt, and I am sure you will also make some long-lasting ones. Enjoy!
