Are you planning a trip to Mexico? Well, have you considered the vibrant city (my hometown!) Puerto Vallarta? Its fantastic beaches, rich culture, delicious cuisine, and friendly locals make it a favorite destination for many travelers.
I was raised in Puerto Vallarta from the age of 3 until I was 16. I haven’t lived full-time in Vallarta for over 15 years, but I frequently visit as my family still lives here. Vallarta is undeniably my home!
The city holds a special place in my heart, not just because of the familiarity, but because it is truly a slice of heaven on Earth. Located in the state of Jalisco on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, Puerto Vallarta is surrounded by beautiful beaches and green mountains.
It has become a very popular destination due to its numerous outdoor activities and unique attractions—Vallarta is the number one return-to destination city all over Mexico, as well as among the five safest cities in the country!
In this blog post, I’ll highlight the top things to do in Puerto Vallarta so that you can make the most out of your visit.
Together, we’ll explore the most popular attractions in Puerto Vallarta. Plus, artsy, free, and fun things to do, as well as day trip ideas for those extending their stay in PV.
Best Time to Visit Puerto Vallarta
While Puerto Vallarta is a great destination year-round thanks to its tropical climate, certain times of the year offer the best weather and less crowds.
The peak season runs from October to April, with warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine.
However, if you want to avoid the crowds and save some money, consider visiting during the shoulder season from May to September. While you may experience a few rain showers, you will enjoy lower hotel rates and fewer tourists.
My favorite time to visit is June, but remember that summer is the hottest time of year.
No matter when you visit, you will fall in love with this charming and vibrant city.
Best Ways to Get Around Puerto Vallarta
Getting around Puerto Vallarta is relatively easy. Taxis and Uber are easily accessible, and Uber is very inexpensive.
Another great way to get around Puerto Vallarta is by bus or walking. The bus system in Puerto Vallarta goes all over the city and is cheap. Most buses are clean and feature air-conditioning, so it’s a nice ride.
With most of the top attractions being in the Centro or Zona Romántica area, you can catch a bus to this area and go from there. Walking is the easiest way to sight see once you arrive in “El Centro” or Old Town.
Of course, if walking is difficult for you, then taking a taxi or Uber will be your best bet.
Top Things to Do in Puerto Vallarta
There are so many fabulous things to do in Puerto Vallarta it can be hard to narrow down the top attractions. The following are my favorites and, honestly, are things you won’t want to miss when you visit. As a bonus, many of these are also free activities.
Viejo Vallarta (Old Town)
The Romantic Zone of Puerto Vallarta, also known as Viejo Vallarta (Old Vallarta) or Zona Romántica, is one of the best places to visit in Puerto Vallarta. I love wandering the charming streets and admiring the colorful buildings.
You will also find some of the best restaurants, with many being local favorites. You can even enjoy dinner right on the beach if you want.
I love this area of Puerto Vallarta because it’s more authentic. If you prefer to mingle with the locals when you travel, this area is for you! Additionally, Viejo Vallarta is an excellent area if you want to escape the large resort style hotels.
Plus, Playa Los Muertos is easily accessible from the Romantic Zone. Playa de los Muertos is one of the most popular beaches, and you can relax on the soft sand and soak up some sun while enjoying panoramic ocean views and drinking micheladas.
In the evenings, the area comes alive with a vibrant nightlife scene. There are numerous bars and clubs where you can dance the night away and enjoy a refreshing cocktail.
Fun fact: Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton used to live here back in the late 70s.
The Malecon
Of course, no visit to Puerto Vallarta would be complete without a stroll along the Malecon. Located in downtown Puerto Vallarta between the Hotel Zone and Old Town, the Malecon is a mile-long boardwalk in the heart of the city—a beautiful sunset spot and a lively area frequented by locals and tourists.
Here, you will find restaurants, galleries, and many bars. The Malecon is also a hub for vibrant nightlife, with many nightclubs for dancing and live entertainment.
Other favorite parts of the Malecon are the unique sculptures created by talented artists. Art lovers will enjoy them, and they are a popular backdrop for Instagram photos!
You can also often find free live music performances at the Amphitheater.
Experience the Papantla Flyers
If you want to witness a traditional Mexican ritual, be sure to catch the Papantla Flyers on the Malecon. This ancient ritual involves dancers climbing up a pole and performing acrobatics while suspended by ropes.
This rich cultural experience dates back over 450 years. Originating from the Totonac people of Veracruz, this ceremony was designated by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009.
The ceremony is typically accompanied by a musician at the top of the pole, playing a flute and drum, setting a rhythmic tone for the flyers.
This fantastic ritual is a powerful symbol of the area’s indigenous past and a testament to human bravery. It’s a mesmerizing sight that you won’t want to miss.
Visit the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Another of the wonderful places to visit in Puerto Vallarta is the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe. She is a stunning architectural beauty with an iconic crown topped tower.
My favorite thing is to see the sun glow through the beautiful stained-glass windows and illuminate the altar. This experience makes for a wonderful moment of solitude.
Escape to Cuale River Island
For a peaceful escape from the bustling city, head to Cuale River Island. This tranquil oasis is a park and a market nestled in the middle of the Cuale River (Rio Cuale) and offers a variety of activities to enjoy.
You can take a leisurely stroll through the lush green hiking trails that wind through the island, immersing you in the serene beauty of the local flora and fauna. Or, explore the rich culture and history showcased in its many art galleries.
The island also has a unique pedestrian bridge leading to the popular area of Gingo Gulch.
Eat The Best Tacos in Puerto Vallarta
No visit to Mexico is complete without trying our specialty: tacos! Luckily for you, one of my favorite things to eat (probably like any other Mexican) is tacos, so you can bet I know where the best tacos in my hometown are.
Below is a list of the best tacos in town, the local favorites. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
1. Tacos Sonorita Olas Altas: Located in Old Vallarta. Come here to enjoy expertly prepared tacos al pastor, ribs, and fundidos with melted cheese and a choice of meats. Pair your meal with margaritas, beer, michelada, or agua de horchata. For dessert, try their famous cheesecakes!
2. Los Huichos Aralias: Fantastic street tacos. Cheap and perfectly marinated al pastor tacos.
3. Tacos on the Street Nuevo Vallarta: Delicious handmade tortillas and tender rib-eye meat make these tacos some of the best in town, and they’re worth every penny.
4. Arrieros Marypaz: It doesn’t get more local than this. Try authentic asada, adobada, chorizo, beans, and cheese tacos on flour or corn tortillas. Be sure to come hungry because the portions here are BIG!
5. El Taquito Hidalguense: For the best breakfast tacos (yes, breakfast!), visit this small joint located downtown. Serving exquisite lamb barbacoa tacos and quesadillas.
6. El Camarón Express: This list wouldn’t be complete without fresh seafood tacos! Come to Camarón Express for flavorful shrimp and crispy fish tacos, or tuna tostadas, and enhance your experience with a refreshing margarita.
Watch the Sunset at Los Muertos Pier
For stunning views of Bahía de Banderas (Banderas Bay), head to Los Muertos Pier. This picturesque pier is a popular spot for both locals and tourists.
As the day draws to a close, many people gather to experience some of the most breathtaking sunsets.
It is a fabulous way to end the day. I promise Los Muertos Pier, with its charm and vibrancy, is a spot you won’t want to miss.
Take a Free Walking Tour
While you’re in the Zona Romantica take advantage of the free walking tour they offer that meets in the Municipal Tourism Office in the Old City Hall building.
These tours are led by local guides who will take you on a journey through the city’s history, culture, and hidden gems.
It’s a great way to get to know the city and its people while also saving some money. But don’t forget to tip your guide!
Explore Marina Vallarta
If you are tired of the beach, head over to Marina Vallarta. I love it because there is so much to do here. There is a lovely boardwalk where you can take a wonderful morning walk or casually admire the yachts in the marina.
Also featured is the El Faro Lighthouse, which has a bar at the top and is a perfect spot for a romantic rendezvous.
Additionally, Marina Vallarta offers a variety of boutique and jewelry stores, art galleries, as well as numerous restaurants to choose from. Some of my favorites are:
Sonora Prime: For prime steak and authentic Mexican dishes accompanied by delicious mixology, all within a cozy ambiance.
El Coleguita: For fresh seafood served in generous portions.
Mr. Cream: For the best breakfast in town with beautiful views of the Marina.
Marina Vallarta is also a great spot to find a day spa for pampering yourself. Last but not least, the marina is another terrific sunset-viewing location.
Go Parasailing
One of the most unique things to do in Puerto Vallarta is to experience parasailing.
Secured to a parachute, you’ll ascend into the sky, not only getting your blood pumping but also enjoying the best views of the Pacific Ocean and the city.
Parasailing can be done all over Vallarta, simply walking along popular beaches will present plenty of opportunities.
You can also book in advance from tour operators by simply searching online. The cost is between $50 to $80 USD and the duration is of approximately 15 min.
Hike to the Top of Mirador de La Cruz
Reaching the top of Mirador de La Cruz is an adventure in itself. The hike is relatively moderate, but can be challenging for some. The path is steep, but it is a gradual incline. As you ascend, you will pass through some charming neighborhoods.
Once you reach the top, your reward will be a 360-degree panorama of Puerto Vallarta and the Bay of Banderas.
The beautiful bay sparkles brilliantly, and the marvelous city is below. You can even see the emblematic Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe from here.
Go Whale Watching
One of the best things to do in Puerto Vallarta is to take a boat tour and go whale watching. Unfortunately, this activity is only available during whale season, which runs from December to March, with the peak occurring between January and February.
It is not guaranteed, but with a little bit of luck, you will witness humpback whales, and with a lot of luck (I have only seen them twice in my life), you can even spot Orcas or killer whales. Another amazing sight is witnessing calf swimming and jumping with their mothers.
There are several options for whale watching excursions. Be sure to check reviews and choose a reliable tour provider.
I recommend doing private tours or small group tours; this will allow you to have a more intimate experience, set your own schedule, take swimming or snorkeling breaks, and enjoy snacks and drinks of your choice.
Witnessing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat is an awe-inspiring experience.
Visit Playa Gemelas
One of the best beaches in Puerto Vallarta is Playa Gemelas. Located just 20 minutes south of downtown, this small shoreline offers crystal-clear waters and a sandy beach. You can easily reach this hidden gem by taxi.
Playa Gemelas provides a quieter beach experience away from the crowds. With its two pristine sandy coves and gentle waves, it’s the perfect place for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying panoramic views of the Pacific Coast.
There are no commercial establishments on the beach, so I recommend bringing your own essentials, such as water and snacks.
Explore the Botanical Gardens
If you love nature, then a visit to the Puerto Vallarta Botanical Gardens is a must. This unique sanctuary is home to a large variety of species of plants and birds.
Exploring the gardens you can see many types of tropical plants, plus their wonderful orchid collection.
You can take a guided tour or explore one of the many hiking trails to see the diverse plants that call this beautiful place home. Plus, there is a river you can swim at and a restaurant with beautiful views.
Go Ziplining!
Are you looking for an adrenaline-fueled adventure? Go ziplining in Vallarta!
Surrounded by lush tropical landscapes, numerous zipline tours offer an exhilarating experience as you soar above treetops and across scenic canyons.
Feel the rush as you traverse thrilling zipline courses through the jungle, offering panoramic views of Puerto Vallarta’s natural beauty. Whether you’re a first-time adventurer or a seasoned thrill-seeker, the variety of ziplining options caters to all levels.
Enjoy Fun Water Sports
Puerto Vallarta is a fantastic destination for water sports enthusiasts. From surfing, kitesurfing, jet skiing, kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling, diving, and more, the options are endless!
Puerto Vallarta offers an exhilarating array of water sports against the backdrop of its stunning coastal scenery.
Snorkeling and scuba diving enthusiasts can explore vibrant underwater ecosystems and marine life. The bay’s consistent winds make it a windsurfer’s paradise. And, for a more relaxed experience, embark on a sunrise or sunset cruise to try your hand at fishing. The diverse options cater to all adventure levels.
Rhythms of the Night Cruise and Dinner Show
Rhythms of the Night by Vallarta Adventures is a sunset cruise that departs from Puerto Vallarta to Las Caletas, where you’ll arrive at a secluded beach illuminated by torches.
Here, you will enjoy a “feast for the senses” with a candle-lit buffet dinner and a mesmerizing live performance, blending traditional dance, music, acrobatics, and storytelling to immerse you in the rich culture of Mexico. Cirque du Soleil style!
The entire experience lasts around 5 hours, and you can depart from either Puerto Vallarta or Nuevo Vallarta.
Check Vallarta Adventures site for prices, dates, timing, and book in advance.

Beach Escapes from Puerto Vallarta
Visit Los Arcos National Marine Park
A visit to Los Arcos National Park is a beautiful day trip from Puerto Vallarta.
The park is home to abundant sea life, from many types of colorful tropical fish to majestic sea turtles to huge manta rays and octopi. This is because it is a nationally protected marine area. Therefore, it is a popular spot for snorkeling and scuba diving.
You can also book guided tours, which generally include transportation and entry fees. With the tours, local experts share fascinating insights about the park’s ecosystem and conservation efforts.
Whether you’re a seasoned diver or a first-time snorkeler, Los Arcos National Marine Park will indeed offer an unforgettable adventure.
Take a Boat Ride to the Marietas Islands and Find the Hidden Beach
Another fantastic day trip is a boat ride to Las Islas Marietas, a protected UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Marietas Island is the perfect place to snorkel through underwater caves and observe the rich birdlife.
Be sure to discover the famous hidden beach, Playa del Amor. This secluded beach is only accessible through a small tunnel you can only swim or kayak through, but it’s worth it for the unique experience.
This fascinating beach is believed to have been created by military bomb testing done in the early 1900s by the Mexican government.
Cruise to Yelapa
Last but not least, consider a day trip to Yelapa. This small fishing village can only be reached by water taxis, making it a secluded and peaceful getaway.
Take a swim in the clear blue waters of its cove or relax on the beach with a cold drink. You can also hike to the nearby waterfall for some fantastic views.
Charming Towns to Visit from Puerto Vallarta
Sayulita
Just an hour away from Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita is a charming little town that has become popular in recent years. And rightfully so, Sayulita is the perfect destination for a day of relaxation, adventure, or culture.
This quaint fishing village is an excellent escape from the more crowded Puerto Vallarta.
Not only can you take a stroll and admire the cool street art created by local artists, but you can also find a variety of local art galleries and workshops showcasing the work of talented artists from the region.
Shopping is also popular in Sayulita. This gives you the perfect opportunity to find unique souvenirs and gift ideas to take home.
Plus, Sayulita is known for its yoga retreats and studios. There are a variety of classes suitable for all experience levels.
For those seeking nighttime entertainment, the town’s central square comes alive after dark. With bars, restaurants, live music and street performers creating a vibrant atmosphere. From beachfront bars with laid-back vibes to energetic dance clubs, rest assure you will have fun.
Mascota
Nestled in the heart of the Sierra Madre Mountains, the small town of Mascota presents a delightful contrast to the busy beachside vibe of Puerto Vallarta. One of Mexico’s ‘Magic Towns’ it is steeped in tradition and rich history.
The Pueblo Magicos, as they are called, are my favorite towns to explore. As you stroll along the cobblestone streets, you will find colorful colonial buildings and friendly locals.
Mascota offers many delightful attractions for visitors. The unfinished Templo de la Preciosa Sangre (Temple of the Precious Blood) is one of the best. Despite never being completed, this stunning church has a unique charm.
Another not-to-be-missed site is the Mascota Archaeological Museum, home to a collection of artifacts that trace the region’s history back to pre-Columbian times.
While here, don’t forget to try some delicious local street food!
