Things to do in Uluwatu
Uluwatu comes from ulu, meaning ‘lands end’, and watu, meaning ‘rock’.

If you are visiting Bali, make sure Uluwatu is on your list because this is the place to be and let me tell you why. Uluwatu offers incredible beaches, an amazing surf scene and fun activities whilst still preserving the local culture. Unlike Canggu, Uluwatu doesn’t have much traffic, and it’s not as touristy. In this blog post, I will reveal exactly what are the absolute best things to do in Uluwatu from an insider.

Consider this your Uluwatu travel guide. Are you ready? Let’s go!

Where is Uluwatu

First of all, let’s talk about where is Uluwatu.

It’s situated on the Bukit Peninsula, a limestone plateau on the southern tip of Bali. It’s about an hour’s drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport and 45 minutes from popular areas like Seminyak and Kuta (this is if there is no traffic, so take it with a pinch of salt!).

Visit Uluwatu’s Best Beaches

Trust me when I say Uluwatu has some of Bali’s best beaches. So I know this might sound like a cliché, but the first thing you have to do is check the white sand beaches because they are stunning! Here are some of the best ones you should definitely visit:

Best for swimming and surfing (all levels). This great spot needs to be on top of your list. The beach is very clean, crystal clear water, and it’s fairly easy to find some shade as well during hot days. There are loads of facilities there, and you can literally spend all day on this beach because there is everything you might need (except for SPF, you need to bring that!)

If you like swimming and surfing, this is the perfect place. This beach is very easy to access, it’s probably a 5-minute walk down the steps. There are a few stands for quick snacks and drinks as well, which might be handy.

Bingin Beach
Bingin Beach

This beach is perfect to relax or surf, however, getting there is no joke. The impossible is a very small beach and a real gem, but getting there from the main road involves walking for at least 15 minutes, and you might get lost on the way too! But there are a few fishermen or hotel staff around all the time so you can always ask for directions.

Best for amazing scenery and surfing. Quite similarly to the Impossible Beach, this place is super relaxing and ideal for surfers (intermediate to advanced level as there is high tide).

Known for its beautiful white sand and clear blue waters, offers fantastic surfing conditions and breathtaking sunset views.

Best beaches in Uluwatu
Padang Padang Beach

Until now, I have only mentioned small beaches, this one, however, goes on and on for a long while and it’s spectacular! It’s great for just sunbathing or surfing, and there are quite a few bushes where you can hide from the sun during super hot hours.

This beach is ideal for swimming, the water is beautiful and shallow. It’s super easy to reach, just about 10 minutes, and it’s not very crowded.

One of the most beautiful beaches in Uluwatu is Melasti. A hidden gem known for its pristine white sands, turquoise waters, and towering limestone cliffs. It’s a more serene and peaceful beach, away from the crowds.

Go Watch a Traditional Dance Show

Immerse yourself in a rich Balinese cultural experience by watching a traditional dance performance. The Uluwatu Temple hosts the incredible Kecak Fire Dance, which is a mixture of dancing, acting and singing inspired by the story of Ramayana. Expect to see fire, amazing costumes and feel lots of energy!

Try a Yoga Class

Yoga class in Bali

Going to Bali and taking a yoga class is a must! There are a few yoga studios in Uluwatu, but a favorite is The Space. They also offer an incredible sound healing class hosted in a dome. Let me tell you, the acoustic there is something else.

You should also check out La Tribu – The Art of Movement for more yoga classes. Or you can always ask the staff in your accommodation to see if the hotel organizes any classes or for a recommendation of a nearby yoga studio.

If you are also traveling to Canggu be sure to check the article “best yoga studios in Canggu” I wrote.

Treat Yourself to a Spa

The list of top things to do in Uluwatu wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the spa scene. Not only are the Balinese massages famous and very inexpensive, but you will also find some incredible spas, some of them facing the sea.

One of the most famous places to explore is called The Istana, the view over the Indian Ocean here is stunning. You can book a time slot on their website and spend a few hours relaxing in their outdoor spa. While here, you can also indulge in a delicious meal from their cafe or enjoy a yoga class!

If you are looking for more accessible prices, you can ask your accommodation, as they can normally arrange massages for you. There is no shortage of spas in Uluwatu, so you will easily find both budget-friendly and more upscale options.

As the sun sets, Uluwatu comes alive with its vibrant nightlife. Even if you are not a club-kind person, visiting one of the beach clubs is one of the things to do in Uluwatu you must experience. You can go to one of these to watch the sunset and catch up with your friends. The majority of clubs have a free-entry rule. Here are some:

Single Fin: This is the best place to watch the sunset and have some food.

Hatch: This club is not by the sea, but it’s super fun, very colorful and vibrant. It’s perfect for a few drinks with friends.

Ulu Cliffhouse: This is a beach club which turns into a nightclub but also organizes fun events such as cinema nights from time to time.

Savaya and El Kabron: Hands down, these two are the best beach clubs in Uluwatu. With incomparable facilities and mesmerizing cliff and sunset views. They are quite high-end and also offer live music events.

Go Paragliding!

Experience Uluwatu beach from a unique angle with this exhilarating activity, suitable for both beginners and experienced paragliders. You will take off from the cliff at Nyang Nyang Beach, and the journey typically lasts around 20 minutes. Get in touch with them to ensure the weather conditions are suitable for flying, and remember to wear sneakers or closed shoes.

Try a Surf Class

Surfing in Uluwatu

Uluwatu is a surfer’s paradise, with some of the best waves in Bali. Waves that cater to both beginners and experienced surfers. If you’ve never tried it before, let me tell you, Uluwatu is a great place to start! The instructors are very knowledgeable, and you are not going to break the bank. Padang Padang or Bingin Beach would be the best places for beginners, make sure you book your class the day before to secure your spot. Head here to find out where to learn how to surf in Bali.

Watch the Sunset Every Day

Watching the sunset is one of the best things to do in Uluwatu

There is a famous writing on the wall near Padang Padang Beach that says “You are given one sunset a day”. Sunsets in Uluwatu are magical, so you have to make sure you won’t miss any of them during your stay! If you want to watch it from the beach, I would suggest Bingin Beach. You can enjoy live music at sunset time, the smell of grilled fish and the cute dogs running up and down. You can swim or surf during the golden hour and just enjoy the vibe until the sky turns red!

Try Social Dancing

Guys, social dancing in Bali is a thing! Even if you have no idea about how to dance salsa, bachata and so on, social dancing nights are so much fun – you have to give it a go. This restaurant called Rolling Fork offers social dancing nights every Tuesday evening, and they are free to attend. You don’t even have to have dinner there if you already have other plans.

Get Fit at Bambu Fitness

I know there are many things to do in Uluwatu, the gym might not be on your list at all, but trust me when I say you have to check out this gym! Classes here are incredible, the architecture is very unique, and I even fell in love with the changing rooms! They have all sorts of classes starting from early in the morning and for all levels. Also, right next to Bambu Fitness, you can find Bambu Cafe which is delicious! You can order healthy food and even customize your salad if you want.

Get a Delicious Smoothie Bowl

Head to The Loft for a delicious smoothie bowl in a stylish café. You can pick from different toppings and customize it as much as you want. This popular spot also offers nice meals from breakfast all the way to dinner, and it’s located a few minutes drive from Bingin Beach.

If you are visiting Thomas Beach instead, you can get an amazing smoothie bowl at Suka Espresso which is just opposite the way down to the beach. They only serve them before lunchtime, so make sure to secure yours in the morning on your way to Thomas Beach! Check out this blog post if you want to find out the best brunch spots in Uluwatu.

Get Some Work Done at a Cool Coworking Space

Whether you’re a digital nomad or not, if you have to get some work done, I’ve got your back. You can either opt for a coworking space called The Space or local cafes such as Alchemy or Chela. The Space is perfect if you also need to have some calls and need the perfect Wi-Fi and privacy. There is a small phone booth and a few meeting rooms available to book. As mentioned before, this coworking space also includes a yoga studio, which is awesome!

Visit the Drifter

The Drifter shop

Anyone who has been to Uluwatu would tell you to go to visit the Drifter, this is a fact! There is something about this place that attracts people from all over the world, and I’ll tell you why. It’s supposed to be a surf shop, but it’s a lot more. Its wooden structure, the ceiling fan, the music, and interior design will make you feel like you’re in the right place. There is also a meticulously curated selection of books which goes from surf guides to spiritual practices, self-help and a lot more. The back of the store is a delicious vegan restaurant and from time to time, an art gallery too.

Check out the Uluwatu Temple

The Uluwatu Temple

The Uluwatu Temple is definitely worth a visit if you want to deep dive into the Balinese culture. It’s a Balinese Hindu famous temple located right on top of a steep cliff by the Ocean. It can get quite busy, so make sure you ask the locals what time would be best to visit.

Make sure you also book your ticket for the Kecak dance I mentioned before and don’t forget there are loads of naughty monkeys there. If you didn’t see this coming, keep reading…

Things you Need to Know about Monkeys in Uluwatu

Monkeys in Bali
was a bit nervious not gonna lie

If you’ve been to the Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud, you will know by now how monkeys can be cheeky in Bali.

In Uluwatu you will see a lot of monkeys, especially by the Uluwatu Temple and your accommodation, if it is close to the beach or surrounded by lots of nature.

Here are a few things you need to know:

1. This will surprise you but monkeys come and go around the same time every day. Ask your hotel staff what time exactly you would expect monkeys to come. They would literally steal everything you have in sight, so make sure the door/window is locked, and you don’t have anything outside. The time changes from hotel to hotel but the fact that they are punctual, it’s very funny.

2. Monkeys love visiting the beach so make sure you don’t have food with you and no plastic bottles. Bingin and Padang Padang are the beaches where you can definitely expect to see them. Again, they have their time to visit. You could either see them on your way down to the beach or right on the beach.

3. If you meet some monkeys, avoid eye contact straight away and do not try to touch them. If they want to get your bag, leave it on the floor immediately. Chances are they only check if you have plastic bottles or food, that’s it. But if you don’t drop the bag, they might bite you which I can tell by experience, it’s not pleasant at all!

Tips on How to Get Around Uluwatu

    Driving scooters in Bali

As you might guess, the best way to get around Uluwatu is by renting a scooter or ordering a scooter taxi such as Grab or Gojek. However, there are a few things to keep in mind in both cases:

    1. If you are renting the scooter, unless you are a very experienced driver, don’t drive to Nyang Nyang Beach all the way down. There is a parking space on the top, which is also where the Grab/Gojek driver would leave its customers. There is a reason for it, the way down becomes incredibly steep just before getting to the beach, and it could be very dangerous venturing down. It doesn’t look bad when you see the street from the top, that is because the beginning is easy.
    2. If you are opting for getting Grab/Gojek, keep in mind that there are some areas where they are not allowed. For example, they are not allowed around Bingin Beach, in this case, all you have to do is walk a bit further (I normally call it by the Karma Backpacker hostel) and it would work.
    3. I do not recommend using regular taxis.

    Where to Stay in Uluwatu

    Six Sense Uluwatu

Uluwatu offers a range of accommodations catering to all preferences and budgets. You will find some amazing cliff-top luxury resorts with stunning ocean views and exclusive amenities like Alila Villas Uluwatu and Six Senses.

Budget travelers can find affordable guesthouses and hostels near popular surf spots and cultural attractions. If you are traveling with a group, I would recommend looking into villa rentals on Airbnb or Booking.com. Private villas will provide the perfect space and necessary privacy and flexibility. Whether you prefer beachfront villas, eco-friendly retreats, or secluded hideaways, Uluwatu has lodging options to suit every taste.
